The story

Bare Knuckle III is the Japanese version of Streets of Rage 3. The Japanese version is known for having a more balanced challenge due to some gameplay changes made to the Western version in its localization. The plot was also heavily modified.

What it’s like

Chunky, saturated 16-bit sprites against flat, poster-bright city backdrops: neon signs, graffiti-streaked alleys, rooftops at dusk, and a lurid cyberpunk sheen that gives the streets a restless, after-hours glow. The sprites are big and expressive, with punchy animation that rewards close attention to every hit and recoil. Chiptune-driven music pulses hard under the action, with synth-heavy grooves and driving basslines that feel more like a nightclub than a quiet room. The overall vibe is loud, sweaty, and kinetic, the kind of energy that suits a late-night session alone or a rowdy evening with a friend on the couch. Pacing is relentless but readable: stages push you forward through waves of enemies, with brief pauses to catch breath before the next swarm. Violence is cartoonish and constant, with punches, kicks, and flashy knockouts but no gore, and the tone stays brash and playful rather than grim. It suits players who want co-op brawling, hard-earned mastery, and the satisfying feel of a well-tuned beat 'em up on retro hardware.
