The story

Bruce Lee is a video game designed by Ron J. Fortier, with graphics by Kelly Day and music by John A. Fitzpatrick. It was originally developed for the Atari 8-bit family and published in 1984 by Datasoft, along with a port for the Commodore 64. The game was converted to the ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC and published by U.S. Gold in the same year. An MSX version was published in 1985 by Comptiq. Bruce Lee is a platform game/beat 'em up hybrid, in which the player controls Bruce Lee.

What it’s like

Chunky, blocky sprites on a flip-screen stage, the colour palette tight and bright within the limits of 8-bit home machines, and the whole thing rendered with the stiff, deliberate motion of early computer graphics. Sound is sparse: short chiptune stings, a few looping tones, and the flat clack of hits, so silence and the ticking of the game's own rhythm do much of the work. The vibe is retro and brisk, a little goofy and a little tense, closer to a flicker-book of martial arts poses than to cinematic kung fu. Pacing is screen-by-screen and punchy, with the player stepping through rooms, dodging and striking in quick bursts rather than sustaining one long flow. Emotionally it stays light and arcade-minded, with a sense of testing your reflexes against repeating enemies rather than building toward anything personal. Combat is the core of the experience: hand-to-hand fighting with kicks and punches, mostly cartoonish rather than gory, with defeat signalled by figures falling away in simple animation. It is fast, mildly frustrating and repetitive, and suits a retro gaming session, a nostalgic evening with an old home computer, or a short burst of play. It is for players who enjoy early platform-brawler design, licensed celebrity tie-ins from the eighties, and the charm of primitive pixel martial arts.
