The story

Corrupt ex-cop turned hitman Nick Sax's life is changed forever by a relentlessly positive, imaginary blue winged horse named Happy.

What it’s like

Saturated, lurid color with a gritty, sweaty street texture: rain-slick Manhattan nights under sodium streetlamps and the flat glare of motel fluorescents, all shot with a restless handheld energy that snaps into cartoon-bright inserts whenever the blue winged horse is on screen. The sound is a constant clash of grimy hip-hop-tinged cues, dial-tone electronics and buoyant pop, with the brutal action punctuated by sudden silences. Its vibe is profane, gleeful and jittery, a cynical hitman's bad night drifting into absurd fairy-tale whimsy. Pacing is brisk and episodic, with abrupt tonal swings from comedy to dread. Emotionally it follows a burnt-out, self-loathing man reluctantly learning to care about a child and a kinder version of himself. The intensity is high: frequent graphic gunfire, stabbings and gore, bloody torture, strong profanity, drug use and sexual references, with cruelty played for both shock and laughs. Not for anyone wanting something gentle. It suits adults who like dark crime comedy with a surreal streak and a taste for genre-bending bite.
