The story

For a chance at a pardon, a ninja assassin joins other condemned criminals on a journey to a mysterious island to retrieve an elixir of immortality.

What it’s like

Sharp, saturated animation with bold inked outlines, flat washes of vermilion, indigo and ochre, and a frequent shift into painterly backgrounds during quiet moments. The Edo-era settings feel humid and sun-struck, with bamboo groves, pale sea mist and crooked wooden towns that turn grim after dark. Fights are fluid and kinetic, with sudden stillness before a strike and sound design that makes every blade and gunshot land hard, backed by taiko drums, plucked strings and bursts of distorted synth. Its vibe is brooding, wry and bloody, the kind of show to watch late at night with the volume up. The pacing alternates tense, talky stretches among a volatile group of prisoners with abrupt, brutal set pieces. Violence is frequent and graphic: sword wounds, severed limbs and gore splashing across the screen, with occasional nudity and cruelty among the condemned. It suits viewers who want stylish, body-heavy action and a slow-building distrust between characters, not gentle viewing.
