The story

Ten years have passed since the end of Bakumatsu, an era of war that saw the uprising of citizens against the Tokugawa shogunate. The revolutionaries wanted to create a time of peace, and a thriving country free from oppression. The new age of Meiji has come, but peace has not yet been achieved. Swords are banned but people are still murdered in the streets. Orphans of war veterans are left with nowhere to go, while the government seems content to just line their pockets with money.

What it’s like

Clean, bright 2D animation with crisp linework, saturated but grounded colour, and a lot of warm daylight over Meiji-era streets, wooden townhouses, and open countryside. The action is fluid and fast, with sword duels rendered in sharp, kinetic bursts of motion followed by long, quiet beats of wind through grass or a bowl of rice shared in a dim room. The score leans on taiko drums and string motifs that swell during fights and retreat to near silence afterward. Vibe: earnest, wistful, with a steady undercurrent of unease. Violence is regular and visible: swordplay with blood and wounds shown, some cruelty and killing, but not graphic gore or sexual content. It is more intense than gentle, though its warmth and humour soften the edges. Suited to an evening of focused viewing, or a weekend binge for viewers who like period dramas with heart and well-staged action. Best for people who want historical texture, a melancholy hero, and a story about what peace costs.
