The story
Best friends Marie and Alexia decide to spend a quiet weekend at Alexia's parents' secluded farmhouse. But on the night of their arrival, the girls' idyllic getaway turns into an endless night of horror.
What it’s like
Harsh, grainy night-time darkness broken by sudden flashes of fluorescent light and the wet red of arterial spray, with long stretches of lush, humid countryside daylight before everything turns. Alexandre Aja's French slasher runs on claustrophobic handheld intimacy: tight close-ups, sweat-slicked faces, cramped rooms in sickly yellows and muddy greens, and a sparse, pulsing score that drops out to leave only breathing and the rasp of a motor. Its vibe is feverish dread, a bloody and unrelenting nightmare with little room to breathe. Gore is extreme and explicit, with decapitation, impalement, chainsaw violence and corpses shown up close, and the sexual content is brief. The pacing is relentless once the terror starts, and the emotional register is raw panic and survival, with a friendship pushed to its limit. This is for viewers who want visceral, stomach-churning horror and can handle sustained graphic brutality, not for anyone seeking something gentle or a slow-burn mystery.
