The story

The Grimm Troupe is the second of the four free content pack for Hollow Knight, following Hidden Dreams on the 13th June, 2017. It was released on the 26th October, 2017. It will be followed by Gods & Glory on the 26th August, 2018.

What it’s like

Hand-drawn 2D with inked, slightly rough outlines and near-black cavern backdrops, lit mostly by small pools of amber and ember-orange flame against cold blue shadow. The palette stays narrow and muted, so every glow feels like a warning or a reward. Sound leans on sparse, wistful strings and long stretches of quiet, with the mood tightening into driving percussion when a fight begins. It plays like a dark, circus-tinged nightmare: a set of challenge arenas built around a traveling troupe of grotesque performers, paced by short bursts of combat and long, careful climbs back to safety. Violence is stylized and frequent, with boss fights that are tense and punishing rather than gory; the dread comes from atmosphere and difficulty more than from blood or shock. The emotional register is melancholy and uneasy, with a streak of dark whimsy. It suits a late-night session alone with headphones, and fits players who enjoy precise, demanding combat and a bleak, theatrical world they can slowly master.
