The story
Darkest Dungeon: The Crimson Court is the first expansion for the award-winning grim and gothic RPG by Red Hook Studios. Crimson Court is a parallel campaign experienced alongside the main Darkest Dungeon content that will provide you with new challenges and variation at every difficulty level. The narrative grounding sheds some light on the Ancestor’s early days, and will be presented in the same style of cut-scenes you’ve seen elsewhere in the game. The DLC is designed to be played alongside an existing campaign, or as a brand new one–your choice! The events and features will unlock over the course of play.
What it’s like
Hand-drawn gothic decay rendered in flat, painterly frames: sickly greens, bruised purples and the warm amber of torchlight pooling across rotting stone, with the stiff, ink-edged portraits of the Crimson Court's vampire nobles framed like a gallery of nightmares. Its soundtrack is a low, mournful string and organ bed, punctuated by sudden stingers and the wet clatter of combat, while the narrator's gravelly voice and the heroes' stress-driven mumbling carry the atmosphere. The vibe is cold, elegant dread with a bleak sense of decadence: a tense, reflective sort of late-night play, best for a dark evening or a long session with a cup of something warm. Pacing is deliberate and turn-based, with each fight and retreat weighing on the party's sanity and fortunes, so people's arcs unfold as slow erosion and grim resolve. Violence is frequent and stylised: bloody hits and grotesque enemy designs, cruel attrition and permadeath stakes, but little explicit gore beyond the cartoonish, with horror more in the mood than the spectacle. Built for strategy fans and horror-leaning RPG players who relish brooding atmosphere, meticulous management and a story told in stolen glimpses of a sinister court.
