The story

Homeworld is a 3D real-time strategy game set in space and focusing on the conflict between the Kushan, who are attempting to locate their long-lost homeworld, and the Taiidan Empire which is trying to destroy them.

What it’s like

Vast black voids lit by nebula glow, with ships drifting in true three-dimensional space and the camera free to swing around them. The look is painterly rather than gritty: hazy blue and violet gas clouds, pale hull lines catching starlight, and the gleam of fleets in formation against deep emptiness. Sound is mostly a low, hushed ambience broken by orchestral swells and mournful strings that rise when the mood turns, with the crisp chatter of battle kept clean and distant. Pacing is deliberate. Long stretches of pausable, methodical planning give way to sudden, weighty clashes where capital ships trade fire across open space. The vibe is melancholy wonder, a quiet ache of exile and searching, with a sense of grandeur that is more awe than triumph. Violence is present throughout as ship-to-ship combat, with explosions and drifting wreckage, but it is abstract and bloodless: no gore, no character harm on screen. It suits a rainy evening with headphones, or a patient player who enjoys tactical micromanagement. It is for people who love space opera, slow-burn stories of lost origins, and the feeling of commanding something enormous from a cool, distant view.
