The story
SpaceEngine is a 3D astronomy program and game engine developed by Russian astronomer and programmer Vladimir Romanyuk. Using real astronomical catalogs and procedural generation, it creates a three dimensional planetarium representing the entire universe. Users can travel through space in any direction or speed, and forwards or backwards in time. It uses pseudo-random numbers to procedurally create any kind of planetary system, nebula or galaxy.
What it’s like
Vast, silent and star-dense, with no characters and no narrative pull: the view is a sweep of real catalogue stars, glowing nebulae and galaxies rendered in clean, cold digital light, and the planets you land on have the bare, unfussy look of computed terrain. Long unbroken drifts through empty black space alternate with sudden close approaches to ringed gas giants or blue-white suns, and the palette leans toward deep indigo, teal haze and pinpoint white. Sound is minimal, a soft ambient hum with the occasional low drone and little else, so the experience is mostly stillness and scale. Time can be wound forwards or back, so you can watch a region of sky shift over millennia with the slow patience of a planetarium dome. The pace is entirely self-set: there is no tension, no enemies, no violence, no gore and no fear beyond the abstract awe of distance. It suits a late-night session alone with headphones, a sleepless wind-down, or a curious mind wanting to feel how large the universe is. It is for people who want quiet wonder, spacious calm and a sense of the cosmos without story or stakes.
