Humshakals
2014 · Directed by Sajid Khan
Original language: Hindi
- comedy
The story
A comedy centered around three people who each have a lookalike of a lookalike, all with the same name.
What it’s like
Bright, saturated studio lighting over garish sets: primary-colour production design, glossy digital frames, and wide, busy compositions built for slapstick, with the camera cutting quickly between doubled characters. The sound is loud and bouncy, a Bollywood score of brass stabs, big pop-song interludes and sudden comic sound effects that punctuate every mix-up. Mood is goofy, overcaffeinated and warm, the kind of over-the-top absurdity that feels more like a sketch show stretched to feature length than anything subtle. It suits a lazy Saturday afternoon, a group watch with friends, or a light background pick when you want to laugh without thinking. Pacing is brisk and cheerful, with farce escalating through repeated misidentifications and physical gags, and the emotional register stays playful throughout, with the leads' arcs mostly about cheerful bungling and sorting out who is who. Intensity is low: slapstick pratfalls and mild physical comedy, no real violence, no gore, no sexual content, nothing frightening. It is for people who want broad, silly, fast-moving comedy with lots of colour and music, and who are happy with big farce over subtlety.
