The story

Inscryption is an inky black card-based odyssey that blends the deckbuilding roguelike, escape-room style puzzles, and psychological horror into a blood-laced smoothie. Darker still are the secrets inscrybed upon the cards...

What it’s like

Candlelit darkness with the warm amber of a single lamp over a wooden table, and everything rendered in inky blacks, bone whites and blood reds, like a hand-drawn woodcut that has been left out in the damp. The look shifts as the game unfolds: crisp paper cards and rough cabin walls give way to grainy, glitched corridors and sudden flat-colour sequences that feel like a tape being chewed. The sound is sparse and uneasy, with ticking clocks, muffled footsteps and a low drone that swells when a card is played, so long stretches of quiet are broken by small, deliberate clicks. The vibe is eerie, cryptic and quietly unsettling, best suited to a late night alone with headphones on, when you want puzzles that keep you guessing. Pacing is methodical, built around card battles and slow reveals that reward patience rather than reflexes. Its tone is wry and sly, and its central arc follows a player gradually realising the rules are not what they seemed. Intensity is moderate: blood and cartoonish gore appear on the cards and in a few scenes, with creeping dread and unsettling imagery rather than sustained brutality. It is for players who enjoy strategy, mystery and slow-burn horror, and who like their games strange.
