The story
The adventures of a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.
What it’s like
Vast, sun-bleached farmland under a dust-hazed amber sky gives way to the black velvet of deep space, with the film's most striking images coming from IMAX-scale wide shots of spacecraft gliding against swirling gas and enormous, unreal planets. Interiors are practical and warm: wood-panelled rooms, soft tungsten lamps, and cramped capsule corridors lit in cool blue. Long, patient takes let the camera drift through the ship and out into the void, and Hans Zimmer's organ-heavy score swells in pulses that feel almost physical. Pacing is stately with sudden jolts of tension, and the mood is awe-struck, melancholy and hopeful, a steady ache of longing for home and family. Violence is absent; peril is mostly mechanical and existential, with brief moments of dread and some sad, emotional beats. Best for late-night, headphones-on viewing, for people who want grand scale, scientific wonder and a bittersweet, big-hearted emotional journey.
