The story

The story takes place in an age where "Ajin" (demi-human), more casually known as "Demi," have slowly started to become accepted into human society. Tetsuo Takahashi is a biology teacher who ends up teaching three such Demi, hoping to understand more about them while also managing to catch their attention.

What it’s like

Bright daylight classroom palettes, saturated school uniforms, and bouncy, exaggerated character animation give this a cheerful, lightly chaotic look, with the comedy often played in rapid cuts and squash-and-stretch gags. The mood is warm and playful, with a gentle undercurrent of unease whenever the fantasy creatures' differences become a source of prejudice among classmates. Episodes move briskly, one slice-of-life scene after another, and the score is light and upbeat, with sudden quiet beats for sincere moments. The emotional register stays friendly and teasing rather than dark: a reluctant teacher slowly warming to his students, and a group of unusual girls learning to trust each other. Intensity is mild. There is some suggestive humour and fanservice, occasional comic peril, and bullying that is addressed with some seriousness but not dwelt on, with no real gore. It suits an easy weeknight, background viewing, or anyone who wants a lighthearted fantasy comedy with a sincere heart and no real menace.
