The story
Following the death of his wife, Ip Man travels to San Francisco to ease tensions between the local kung fu masters and his star student, Bruce Lee, while searching for a better future for his son.
What it’s like
Warm, sun-washed San Francisco streets and cramped, tiled training halls lit by tungsten and fluorescent glow, with the grain of a glossy modern digital finish. Wilson Yip frames his fights in wide, mostly unbroken takes so you can follow the footwork and the rhythm of every exchange, while quieter scenes sit in steady medium shots of dinner tables, classrooms and Chinatown storefronts. The score leans on swelling strings and drum hits that rise under the combat and fall away into soft piano during the family moments. The vibe is earnest and nostalgic, a comfortable blend of pride and homesickness, best suited to a weekend afternoon or a comfort rewatch. Pacing is measured: long stretches of conversation and small domestic beats give way to bursts of choreographed kung fu, and the emotional arc follows an aging master softening into a more open, grounded father and teacher. Violence is frequent and stylised, with punches, kicks and staged brawls that land with some impact but little blood or gore, and there is a dramatic, tense edge in a few confrontations. Brief, non-explicit romance and no sexual content. Made for people who love martial arts films with heart, cultural texture and a clear sense of place.
