The story
When Tony Stark's world is torn apart by a formidable terrorist called the Mandarin, he starts an odyssey of rebuilding and retribution.
What it’s like
Bright, glossy Southern California light gives this film a sun-washed, high-gloss surface, with Malibu beaches, sleek glass houses and night-lit Tennessee backroads all rendered in crisp digital clarity and saturated, comic-book colour. Frequent quick cuts, whip pans and widescreen action staging keep the picture busy, while the quieter interludes sit in warm interior light, lamp glow and cluttered workshop gloom. The score is big, brassy and percussive, with rock-tinged swells that punch through the explosions and lighter, wry bits of music in the banter. Pacing is brisk and jokey, with a steady stream of quips that undercut the heavier moments, and the emotional arc follows a shaken, self-doubting hero slowly rebuilding his confidence and his bonds with people who matter to him. Intensity is moderate to high: frequent large-scale action, explosions, gunfire and urban destruction, with bloodless, PG-13 violence and some tense, menacing scenes, but nothing sustained or graphic. It suits a fun, distracted weekend watch, a popcorn night with friends, or a light escape for people who want spectacle, humour and a crowd-pleasing superhero adventure.
