The story

The seemingly invincible Spider-Man goes up against an all-new crop of villains—including the shape-shifting Sandman. While Spider-Man’s superpowers are altered by an alien organism, his alter ego, Peter Parker, deals with nemesis Eddie Brock and also gets caught up in a love triangle.

What it’s like

Big, bright, and busy: saturated primary colours of Spider-Man's red and blue against the grimy beige of a sandstorm-choked New York, with Sam Raimi's restless camera swooping through skyscraper canyons and stop-start street scenes in quick, comic-book cuts. Night scenes glow with sodium-orange streetlight and sharp CGI highlights, while the quieter Peter Parker moments are shot in warm, soft interiors, all golden lamplight, sunlit apartments and rain-streaked windows. The score is big, brassy orchestral swell that tips into playful jazz-pop whenever Peter gets cocky, and the sound design leans on whooshing webs and crunching sand. The mood is earnest and goofy in equal measure, a glossy, slightly overheated melodrama about jealousy, forgiveness and a hero who can't quite get his personal life in order. Expect repeated action set pieces with punchy fight choreography and a few brutal-looking sequences, mostly bloodless but with real peril and a villain whose transformation looks unsettling. Stylised rather than gory, with a few moments of cruel humiliation. Best for fans who want a loud, sincere, romantic superhero comedy-drama and a comfortable Friday-night watch.
