The story

A giant thirty-five-foot shark becomes trapped in a SeaWorld theme park and it's up to the sons of police chief Brody to rescue everyone.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated Florida daylight does most of the work here: sun-bleached water in turquoise and aqua, white concrete and pastel park architecture, and the flat glare of midday over pools and lagoons. The 3-D gimmick shows in its frequent pointed-at-the-camera objects, spears, pipes, and fish that drift toward the lens, and in underwater shots where the murk gives way to clear, lit blue. Sound leans on the familiar two-note pulse with bright, shrill chords when the creature closes in, while dolphin squeaks and park loudspeakers fill the quieter stretches. The pace is brisk and episodic, built around set pieces in tanks, tunnels and open water rather than slow dread. Its tone is goofy, campy and mildly suspenseful, a vibe of cheerful B-movie spectacle. Expect a steady run of shark attacks and bloody moments with some gore and a few deaths, delivered with cartoonish flair rather than lingering cruelty, and some mild crude humour. It suits a silly weekend watch or a nostalgic double feature for fans of eighties creature features who enjoy big, goofy thrills over serious scares.
