The story
After the events at Lake Victoria, the prehistoric school of blood-thirsty piranhas make their way into swimming pools, plumbing, and a newly opened water park.
What it’s like
Bright, garish daylight and saturated water-park colours: turquoise pools, cheap neon slides, sunburnt skin and hot-pink bikinis, shot in a loud, glossy digital style with quick cuts and deliberately lurid 3D-era pop-outs. The sound is a bouncy, synth-tinged pop score that keeps undercutting the carnage, with splashes, screams and wet crunches mixed to the front. It feels like a rowdy summer afternoon gone badly wrong, the kind of thing to put on with friends on a loud Friday night rather than something to sit quietly with. Pacing is fast and scattershot, with the gore arriving in gleefully excessive bursts, and the tone is knowingly crass and silly, more joke than dread. Intensity is high: frequent graphic violence, bloody dismemberment and sudden fatal attacks, alongside plentiful nudity and sexual innuendo that is played for laughs. Its people are a loose crowd of spring-break types and jaded staff who mostly stay one step ahead of the joke. It is for horror-comedy fans who want absurd, over-the-top creature mayhem and don't mind crude humour and female nudity.
