The story
Kohan: Ahriman’s Gift is a real-time strategy game set in the fantasy world of Khaldun. Built on the a Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns gameplay, Ahriman’s Gift is the stand-alone prequel to Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns. Experience the world of Khaldun from a whole new perspective: evil. Lead armies of Shadowbeasts and Undead as you ravage the countryside, driving all enemies before you. Ahriman’s Gift not only provides new campaigns and improved artificial intelligence, but also introduces dozens of new heroes and units to control.
What it’s like
Dark fantasy seen from a top-down, pulled-back camera: scorched earth, sickly green fog over ruined villages, and the glow of spellfire and grave-light against deep night. The palette leans toward bruised purples, bone whites and rot-browns, with unit sprites rendered in a painted, slightly chunky early-2000s style that reads clearly even when armies swarm the screen. Sound is a mix of ominous choral swells, drums marching under a low brass line, and the clatter of skeletal troops and the guttural roar of shadowbeasts. The feel in the hands is methodical: hotkeys, formation orders, resource gathering and base building knit together into long stretches of planning and brief, sharp bursts of battle. Vibe: brooding, grim and quietly satisfying, best in long evening sessions when there is time to build an army and watch it march. Intensity is moderate, with combat that is bloody in a stylised, abstract way rather than graphic, and little that is frightening beyond the grimness of its premise. It suits strategy players who enjoy the methodical grind of macromanagement and want the menace of playing the villain, not the hero.
