The story

Lassie is the pet of Jeff Miller, an 11-year-old farm boy. The two become best friends and enjoy family adventures in the American countryside, teaching each other about love, nature and commitment.

What it’s like

Warm, sunlit Americana shot in bright, even daylight: wide green pastures, dusty farm roads, sturdy wooden barns and a rural landscape that feels open and unhurried. The camera stays steady and fairly conventional, with plenty of medium shots of a boy and his collie crossing fields or sharing a porch, and the image has the saturated, slightly soft polish of mid-century television. The score is a bright, familiar orchestral swell that cues every sentiment clearly, and the rhythm is episodic and gentle, each half-hour a self-contained outing that settles back into calm. Vibe: wholesome, sunny, old-fashioned comfort. It suits a lazy Saturday afternoon, a child's first TV show, or a relaxed family evening. Intensity is very low: some peril, such as a dog rescuing someone from a mishap, but no violence, gore or sexual content, and nothing frightening beyond brief tension. It is for families and anyone who wants a sincere, unfussy story about loyalty and friendship between a boy and his dog.
