The story
Anne Shirley, an orphan, is fostered by farmer Matthew Cuthbert and his sister Marilla, who were expecting a boy to be sent them to help with their farm work. They accept Anne, who quickly endears herself to them and to the local villagers.
What it’s like
Hand-drawn, warm-palette animation with soft watercolour backgrounds, rolling green fields, apple blossom and red dirt lanes, and a lot of golden afternoon light across farmhouse kitchens and orchards. The framing lingers on everyday routines like chores, meals and walks home, and the score is a gentle mix of piano and light strings that swells only at tender moments. Its vibe is warm, nostalgic and quietly bittersweet, the kind of show that suits a slow weekend morning, a comfort rewatch, or an evening with a cup of tea. Pacing is unhurried, with episodes built around small domestic scenes and the occasional burst of childish mischief. Its emotional register is affectionate with some wistfulness about loss and belonging, and its central arc follows a talkative, imaginative orphan girl gradually finding a home and friends in a farming community, while the adults around her soften in turn. Intensity is very low: no violence or gore, no sexual content, and only mild peril or sadness, such as the anxiety of being unwanted. It suits viewers who want something gentle, sincere and heartwarming, including families and anyone who loves classic coming-of-age stories.
