The story
Last Window: The Secret of Cape West is an adventure video game developed by the now-defunct Cing and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo DS handheld game console. It is the sequel to Hotel Dusk: Room 215, starring protagonist Kyle Hyde and placed one year after the events of its predecessor. The game has visual and audio styles similar to that of the first game. In Last Window, Kyle Hyde is living in the Cape West Apartments, Los Angeles, in 1980. The story of this sequel is separate from the first game, even though it includes some connections to it. Last Window was the last game developed by Cing before the company filed for bankruptcy on March 1, 2010.
What it’s like
Rotoscoped characters move with a stiff, hand-traced grace against painted-looking backgrounds of 1980s Los Angeles: sodium-orange streetlight, pale apartment corridors, dim rooms lit by a single lamp. Tapping and dragging across the DS touchscreen makes the world feel physical, from rummaging through drawers to working a vending machine. The sound is sparse, with muted jazz-tinged piano, rain-soft ambience and long pauses in conversation that let tension settle. Scenes unfold through lengthy dialogue trees and occasional puzzle or trivia breaks, so the pace is deliberate, closer to reading a noir novel than racing through one. The mood is melancholy and suspicious, a low-humidity unease with a wistful undercurrent, its characters carrying old regrets as they edge toward truths they would rather leave buried. Violence is mostly offscreen; suicide, grief and crime are handled through talk and implication rather than gore, with a few tense, sad beats. Best for patient players who like mysteries that unfold in conversation, late-night solo sessions and noir-tinged puzzles with a bittersweet edge.
