The story

Lazy Jones is essentially a collection of fifteen smaller sub-games. The game takes place inside a hotel with three floors, connected by an elevator. The character is a lazy hotel employee who does not much care for his work, but prefers to sneak into the rooms to play video games instead.

What it’s like

Chunky, blocky sprites bobbing across flat primary-coloured screens, with the hard buzz of 8-bit square-wave chirps and the clack of the lift between floors doing most of the talking. Lazy Jones is a 1984 collection of fifteen short, deliberately scrappy minigames strung through a three-storey hotel, where the goofy, slouching janitor drifts from room to room, one arcade-style challenge at a time. The look is low-resolution and cheerfully crude: minimal backgrounds, bold colour blocks, and a little hotel lobby and corridor that feel warm and slightly shabby, like a seaside guesthouse on a grey afternoon. The pacing is brisk and stop-start, with short bursts of play, quick fails and immediate restarts, and an easy, loose tone of deadpan slacking that never really pushes for stakes. Its intensity is very low: no gore or cruelty, just the mild peril of falling objects and missed timings. It suits a short session on a rainy Sunday, a bit of nostalgic retro fun, or something to dip into between chores. It is for people who enjoy quirky, bite-sized arcade diversions and a bit of retro charm.
