The story
In Gunfright the player takes the role of a sheriff in the town of Black Rock and is tasked with eliminating outlaws who are scattered throughout the settlement. It was later included in Rare Replay, Rare's 2015 Xbox One retrospective compilation.
What it’s like
Chunky isometric blocks of colour sit on a dusty, sun-bleached western town, with the flat primary palette and attribute-clash shimmer of an early home computer. The view looks down at an angle over saloon fronts, boardwalks and open lots, and the figures are small, stiff sprites that move in tight, deliberate steps. Sound is sparse: a few electronic chirps and the thin crack of a shot, with long stretches of quiet between them, so the town feels empty and watchful. Its vibe is tense, dry and lonely, a slow stalk through a standoff that rewards patience over reflexes. It suits a rainy afternoon, a retro-curious evening, or a short session when you want something small and focused. Pacing is measured and tactical, and the emotional register is dusty suspense rather than spectacle. Violence is cartoonish and bloodless, just gunfire and outlaws vanishing from the street, so it is mild in intensity with no gore and no sexual content. It is for players who enjoy early computer games, quiet western atmosphere, and careful, methodical play.
