The story
The third game in the series combined the gameplay aspects of its predecessors, allowing players to choose between racing opponents of Lotus Turbo Challenge or the arcade-like time trials of Lotus 2. The two-player option was retained and the music selection feature returns (Patrick Phelan's soundtrack to Lotus III spawned many modern remixes). Lotus III also added a third car - a concept Lotus M200 automobile - and allowed the player to choose which one to race with. The game recycled most of the graphics from Lotus 2, but added a number of new sceneries.
What it’s like
Bright, chunky 16-bit road racing seen from behind the wheel, with flat pseudo-3D tracks scrolling past roadside sprites of sun-baked deserts, palm-lined coastlines, and dusk skylines in saturated primary colours. The camera stays fixed and low, so the world rushes toward you in bold, pixelated bands while the Lotus cars hum and rev through the frame. The soundtrack is the centrepiece: driving synth-rock with heavy guitar-tinged leads that loop and repeat, and you can pick which track plays, so the mood shifts from restless to triumphant. The vibe is retro, upbeat and a little rowdy, a good fit for an evening of time trials, a split-screen rivalry with a friend, or a nostalgic session of tinkering with a custom track in the map editor. Pacing is quick and arcade-brisk, with short races, tight timers and leaderboard chasing that keeps you returning for one more lap. There is no violence, gore or cruelty; the only tension is the clock and the car ahead. It suits players who love classic racing games, enjoy beating their own best times, and want energetic, nostalgic 90s motorsport with a rock soundtrack.
