The story
Forced to confront revelations about her past, paramedic Cassandra Webb forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures...if they can all survive a deadly present.
What it’s like
Cool, flat daylight and tinted glass give Manhattan a washed, slightly synthetic sheen, with the city's grids and rooftops framed in clean, symmetrical wide shots and cool blue-grey palettes that flicker into sudden bursts of sickly green when visions hit. Its action is glossy digital, bright and tidy rather than gritty, and the score leans on pulsing synth and orchestral swells that tell you exactly how to feel. The mood is earnest and slightly uncanny, a comic-book sincerity that plays its teen friendships and a woman's reluctant self-discovery straight, with plenty of quiet dialogue between the fight beats. The pace is brisk and episodic, with setpieces punctuating long stretches of talk. Violence is moderate and cartoonish: several fights and crashes with some bloodless peril and a few jolting scares, but no gore and no sexual content. It suits a lazy weekend afternoon, background viewing with a snack, or a comic-book fan who wants a light, undemanding superhero ride. It's for viewers who enjoy hero origin-story energy and female-led ensembles more than arthouse finesse.
