The story

Hit the road with the definitive version of Mario Kart 8 and play anytime, anywhere! Race your friends or battle them in a revised battle mode on new and returning battle courses. Play locally in up to 4-player multiplayer in 1080p while playing in TV Mode. Every track from the Wii U version, including DLC, makes a glorious return. Plus, the Inklings appear as all-new guest characters, along with returning favorites, such as King Boo, Dry Bones, and Bowser Jr.!

What it’s like

Bright, saturated and glossy, with the candy-coloured Mushroom Kingdom rendered in crisp high-definition: sun-warmed beaches, rainbow-striped boardwalks, glowing neon cityscapes and snowy alpine passes, all lit with cheerful, even clarity. The sound is a constant bounce of tinkling item pickups, squeaky engine whines, crowd cheers and a looping, relentlessly upbeat soundtrack that shifts with each course. Pacing is quick and jittery, with short bursts of speed, drifts and sudden shell-hit swerves, though the tension flattens into easy fun when you settle into a comfortable lap. Its feel is playful, buoyant and warm-hearted, a good fit for a lively evening with friends or an easygoing solo session with a handheld on a train. Violence is purely cartoonish: karts spin out, explode into harmless puffs and tumble off ramps, with no blood, gore or real menace. Recommended for families, party groups and anyone who wants joyful, low-stakes competition with a light competitive edge.
