The story

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a crossover fighting game for the Nintendo Switch and the fifth main entry in the series. It features every playable fighter from previous installments alongside new additions such as Inkling and Ridley. The game includes faster combat, new items, and expanded defensive mechanics. Modes include local and online multiplayer, a single-player adventure mode called World of Light, and various casual and competitive rulesets.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated cartoon color on a handheld-friendly screen: stages bloom with candy-bright skies, lava glow, pastel sea mist and dark castle stone, all rendered in crisp, glossy digital art that stays readable even when the screen is crowded with dozens of flashing fighters. Camera pulls wide and swoops in on big moments, and the soundtrack is a cascade of remixed series themes, familiar chiptune hooks, orchestral swells and the occasional hushed ambient passage in World of Light's wider overworld. Its vibe is joyful, chaotic and nostalgic, a living scrapbook of Nintendo history. It suits a game night with friends, a loud afternoon on the couch, or a quieter solo wander through the single-player map. Combat is fast and slapstick: characters launch, tumble and pummel one another off the edge of the stage in cartoonish bursts, with punches, explosions and ghoulish zombie and Dracula-style fighters adding some spooky flavor, but blood and gore are absent and the tone stays silly. Pacing is quick and rhythmic in matches and more meandering in the adventure. Made for players who love franchise fan service, couch multiplayer and easy-to-learn, hard-to-master brawling.
