The story
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is the fourth console-based entry in the popular Super Smash Bros. series of fighting games. With an even larger roster of fighters than its predecessors and the introduction eight player battles, Smash for Wii U continues to add to the formula that gamers have loved since 1999.
What it’s like
Bright, saturated and busy: the Wii U version of Smash lives in cheerful primary colours, with stages that flip between flat toy-box platforms, fairground arenas, and sprawling Nintendo landscapes, all rendered in crisp HD with exuberant, cartoonish animation. The sound is a barrage of familiar game music remixed into bouncing fanfares and hits, punctuated by the squeaks, shouts and sound effects of a dozen franchises colliding at once. The vibe is raucous, friendly chaos, the kind of thing to play with friends on a loud Saturday night or to pick up for a quick, giddy session while the kettle boils. Matches move at a brisk, shifting tempo, with sudden swings and comical knockouts. The fighting is cartoonish: characters are flung off screens and tossed across the map in bursts of slapstick rather than anything grim or lingering, so the intensity stays light and playful, with no gore, no sexual content and nothing frightening. It suits players who want an easy-to-laugh, crowd-pleasing party game, whether they are seasoned fans of the series or newcomers who just want to crash around a room with four or eight people and enjoy the noise.
