The story

Sonic Mania is a side-scrolling platformer that pays homage to the original Sega Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog games. Players choose from Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles, each with unique abilities, and speed through 13 zones that include redesigned stages from past games alongside original levels. The game features special stages for collecting Chaos Emeralds, time attack with online leaderboards, and split-screen competitive multiplayer.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated pixel art in the style of the 16-bit Genesis era, with sprites that are crisp and chunky, parallax hills and checkerboard loops rendered in candy-bright greens, pinks and electric blues, and bold neon-lit casino and factory zones that glow against deep backdrops. The motion is the point: the camera tracks fast, sweeping through loops, springs and tunnels, and the screen is busy without ever feeling cluttered. The soundtrack is a bouncing blend of chiptune and synth-rock, with cheerful, insistent melodies that loop in the head. The vibe is nostalgic, energetic and playful, the kind of game that suits a weekend afternoon with a controller, a late-night "one more run" session, or a sunny-day replay for anyone who grew up on the originals. Pacing is quick and rhythmic, built around momentum, with bosses that test timing rather than endurance. Intensity is low: cartoon peril, robotic enemies that burst into harmless puffs, and no gore, blood or sexual content. Fun and light, with a sincere affection for the series' history. Made for platforming fans, retro enthusiasts, and families playing together, especially in its co-op and split-screen modes.
