The story

Sonic 3: Angel Island Revisited (Sonic 3 A.I.R.) is an unofficial port of Sonic 3 & Knuckles for Windows PCs. It very closely resembles the original game, but adds features you would only expect from a modern fan game engine - including full support for 16:9 widescreen display, alpha transparency effects, and smooth 360° rotation.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated Genesis-era palettes rendered at widescreen, so the familiar jungle greens, checkered loops and sunset oranges of Angel Island now stretch across a 16:9 frame with clean edges and soft alpha-blended glows where the original used flat dithering. Movement is the centre of the experience: fast, springy running with the camera following smoothly, and loops and half-pipes that rotate without the old jitter. The chiptune score and bouncy ring chimes keep a steady, upbeat pulse, while the sound effects stay crisp and familiar. The vibe is nostalgic and energetic, the feel of revisiting a childhood favourite on a sharper screen, and it suits an afternoon session, a comfort replay, or a short burst of play between other things. Pacing is brisk and rhythmic, built around momentum and exploration rather than tension. Its intensity is mild: enemies burst into harmless animal-like pops, and danger comes from falls and spikes rather than gore, cruelty or fear. It is for players who love classic 2D platforming and want the original design polished for modern displays, and for anyone who wants light, joyful, low-stakes action.
