The story

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles (or simply Sonic 3 & Knuckles or Sonic 3 Complete Edition) is a platform video game which is the result of locking-on Sonic & Knuckles with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 using the former catridge's unique "lock-on" technology. It is essentially a large combined game of its two lock-on components and contains all Zones from the said games and also contains special features unique to this game. This would have been the original Sonic the Hedgehog 3 the developers intended but time constraints by Sega resulted in the game being split into two.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated 16-bit colour everywhere: sun-drenched jungles and checkerboard green hills, lava-orange volcanic caverns, icy blue-white mountains, and the glowing, mechanical gloom of Robotnik's metal fortresses. The sprites are crisp and chunky, the parallax backdrops drift behind you in layers, and the screen rarely holds still for long as Sonic tears through loops and loops of tilework. The soundtrack is a bouncing, bright FM-synth score, with brassy, rushing melodies that speed up with you and an occasional slower, hushed cue in the sky or underwater zones. The pacing is quick and kinetic, but it rewards slowing down to hunt for secret paths and hidden Chaos Emeralds, so it moves between headlong rushes and patient exploration. Intensity is low: enemies burst into harmless animal-shaped puffs, there is no gore, and the only real danger is falling into a pit or drowning if the air runs out. It's a cheerful, upbeat, nostalgic game with a comfortable, slightly mischievous energy, well suited to a comfort replay, a sunny afternoon on the couch, or a co-op session with a friend, and to anyone who loves classic platformers and wants speed with a sense of discovery.
