The story

Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers is a kart racing video game originally based on the 3D Sonic the Hedgehog fan-game "Sonic Robo Blast 2", which itself is based on a modified version of Doom Legacy. It is the sequel to Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart. Hang up your sneakers, because Dr. Robotnik and his ex-enemies are going go-karting! Use the untapped potential of rings to super-charge your vehicle across more than 200 crazy courses. With over 20 unique items and some of the hottest moves on this side of the Floating Island, this is Racing at the Next Level!

What it’s like

Bright, saturated primary colours on sun-warmed tracks: Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers looks like a Saturday-morning cartoon pushed into a sprawling 2.5D world, with chunky sprites, flat pixel-art textures and boldly lit courses that jump between green hills, lava caves, icy ruins and industrial zones. Cameras sit low and follow the kart closely, so speed reads as a rush of colour and motion rather than fine detail. The soundtrack leans on bouncy chiptune loops and the familiar sparkle of collected rings, with item pickups and drift boosts adding punchy, cheerful stings. Its vibe is playful and scrappy, a homemade love letter with a loose, silly energy. Races are short and frantic, with a steady rhythm of boosts, spins and comeback moments that keep the lead changing. Violence is cartoonish and only in the form of spinouts and explosions from items; there is no gore, no sexual content and nothing frightening. Fans of the Sonic franchise, retro kart racers and players who want a free, moddable game for local split-screen sessions with friends will feel most at home.
