The story
Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (or simply Knuckles in Sonic 2) is a platform video game which is the result of locking-on Sonic & Knuckles with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 using the former cartridge's unique "lock-on" technology. As the name suggests, this game is essentially identical to Sonic the Hedgehog 2 with the exception of Knuckles the Echidna starring as the main playable character, and Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles "Tails" Prower are not playable in the game.
What it’s like
Bright, saturated 16-bit pixel art in sunlit jungles, sparkling casino signs and clanking metal factories, with crisp outlines and skies that stay cheerfully clear. The soundtrack is bouncy, looping chiptune synth that rises whenever momentum builds, and the sound effects are small and cheerful: rings chiming, springs boinging, a soft thud when a foe bursts apart. The pace is fast and momentum-driven, with long loops and springs to chase, though this version's protagonist trades speed for gliding across chasms, climbing walls and punching open hidden passages, which makes it feel more like slow exploration than a straight dash. Its emotional register is light and playful, and its arcs are simple: a stubborn guardian gradually drawn into a larger adventure. Violence is cartoonish and bloodless, with robots exploding into confetti-like sparks and animals scampering free, and the only real tension comes from brief falls, drowning timers and boss chases. It suits a sunny weekend afternoon, a nostalgic retro session, or a short sitting when you want something energetic but gentle, for players who enjoy bright, tactile platforming and sprinting through colourful, familiar stages.
