The story

Mario Kart World is a kart racing game for the Nintendo Switch 2, featuring characters from the Mario franchise. It introduces an open-world design to the series, allowing players to drive freely between courses rather than selecting them from a menu. Races support up to 24 players and include new mechanics such as off-roading, boat racing, rail grinding, and wall riding. The game features a Knockout Tour elimination mode where racers compete across connected courses with periodic eliminations at checkpoints, as well as a Free Roam mode for open exploration and collectible-finding.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated daylight over sprawling open terrain: sunlit meadows, sandy coastlines, snowy peaks and rain-slick city streets, all rendered in the clean, toy-like palette Nintendo does best, with the sky often wide and cloudless and the colours popping hard against the grass. The camera trails right behind your kart, bouncing with every jump and widening into a rush of speed when you boost, and the soundtrack is a bouncy run of cheerful, guitar-and-synth tunes that loop cheerfully under engine noise and crowd cheers. Pace shifts between the loose, unhurried wandering of Free Roam, where you can detour to a hilltop or take a shortcut across a lake, and the frantic, shell-flinging sprints of races and Knockout Tour eliminations. Intensity is low: cartoonish collisions, spinning out and comic tumbles, with no blood or real menace, though the elimination pressure can get tense. A fit for a lazy weekend afternoon, a family game night, or a solo wander when you want something playful and cheerful. Made for players who enjoy freewheeling exploration, friendly competition and a light, joyful, all-ages mood.
