The story
A mech simulation featuring a new 3D accelerated graphics engine at the time of its release. The game contains over 20 missions, with access to 18 different mechs. A novelization called Trial Under Fire was written by Loren L. Coleman.
What it’s like
Hard-edged 1999 PC graphics: chunky polygon mechs stomping across dusty brown deserts, forests and cratered wastelands under hazy daylight, with bloom-lit explosions, smoke trails and tracer fire lacing the sky. The camera hangs tight behind the cockpit or swings to external views, so the sense of tonnage is physical, with each step and volley landing hard. The soundscape is heavy and mechanical: servo whines, cannon thumps, radio chatter clipped through a comms channel, and a martial, percussive score that drives rather than soothes. Sessions run in self-contained missions with long build-up between sorties, and the real pleasure is tinkering in the hangar, swapping weapons and armor across eighteen machines before each drop. Vibe: loud, gritty, methodical, with a lived-in military-sim seriousness. Violence is constant but abstract: mechs are destroyed in sparks and fireballs, with no gore or human-scale brutality, and tension comes from pressure and resource management rather than dread. Best for players who want rugged vehicular combat, mech customization, and a deliberate, mission-by-mission grind on a retro PC.
