The story

Front Mission 3, also known in Japan as Front Mission Third, is a tactical role-playing game developed and published by Square for the PlayStation. It was released in Japan in 1999, and North America by Square Electronic Arts and Europe in 2000. Front Mission 3 is the third main entry and the fifth entry overall in the Front Mission series. Like other Front Mission titles, Front Mission 3 is part of a serialized storyline that follows the stories of various characters and their struggles involving mecha known as wanzers. Front Mission 3 was the first title in the Front Mission series to be released in North America, Europe and Australia.

What it’s like

Muted military greens and rust browns on a tactical grid, with the battlefield seen from a raised, map-like angle that makes every mech feel like a small, deliberate piece on a board. Scenes cut between hand-drawn character portraits against flat backdrops and rendered cutscenes of hangars, dusty plains and rain-slicked cities under overcast skies. The score is a restrained blend of martial drums and melancholy synth, rising during skirmishes and falling back into long stretches of quiet. Turns move at a patient, measured pace, so each move feels weighted and the wait between actions becomes part of the rhythm. The vibe is wistful and steady, like a long afternoon spent planning in a cold barracks. Violence is frequent but abstracted: mechs explode in bursts of fire and smoke, pilots die offscreen or in brief, sober scenes, and there is no gore. Its war themes carry real grief and political weight, but the register is contemplative rather than brutal. It suits players who love tactical puzzles, slow-burn sci-fi and branching storylines, and who want a thoughtful strategy session rather than a fast action rush.
