The story

Scenario 2, Target: Child of God, features Medion, Prince of Destonia, and youngest of three sons of Emperor Domaric. Although loyal to his father and his country, he senses that there are other forces at work beneath the tensions between Aspinia and Destonia. He attends the conference in Saraband on behalf of Destonia, along with his brothers Arrawnt and Mageron. As discovered in Scenario 1, much of this influence comes from the Bulzome sect, as well as collaborating separatist factions within both Destonia and Aspinia. Medion works parallel to Synbios of Aspinia, often disposing of rogue Aspinian elements to spare Synbios's force from fighting against its own countrymen. At the end of the game, Medion is forced to battle with Synbios' force when Julian steps in to stop them.

What it’s like

Hand-drawn anime portraits sit over painted fantasy landscapes, and the grid battlefields glow with spell effects in saturated, slightly grainy Saturn colour. The score is bright and martial, with brass-tinged fanfares in the castle halls and a more brooding pulse when the empire's intrigue closes in. Battles unfold at a deliberate turn-based pace, so the screen is mostly quiet between moves, with the occasional clash of steel and flash of magic. The mood is political and melancholy rather than grim: a young prince caught between loyalty to his father and a creeping sense that something is being manipulated behind the treaties. Violence is fantasy-style, with sword and sorcery fights, injured soldiers and deaths handled briskly, with no gore and no sexual content. It suits a slow weeknight session or a long stretch of sitting with a tactics map, and it's best for players who enjoy patient strategy, court politics and a steady, low-key arc about a son learning how far his duty extends.
