The story

Includes the original SpellForce: The Order of Dawn and both the expansions - SpellForce: The Breath of Winter and SpellForce: Shadow of the Phoenix

What it’s like

Dense, painterly fantasy landscapes in muted greens, browns and stone greys, with glowing spell effects punching through the gloom like coloured lanterns. The camera hangs high over isometric terrain, so armies of tiny figures, ruined towers and snowfields read as miniature tableaux rather than close-up action. The soundtrack is orchestral and mournful, swelling during battles and falling back to quiet strings and wind in the villages and wild places between them. Pacing is deliberate: long stretches of exploring, questing and base-building break into bursts of strategic skirmishing, and the rhythm can feel slow to anyone expecting constant combat. Its register is earnest, sincere and a little melancholy, with fantasy stakes played straight and the arc of a reluctant hero gathering allies across a divided world. Violence is moderate and stylised: sword and spell clashes with little blood, no gore, and no sexual content. It suits a rainy weekend with a strategy game, or a long evening of settling into a world and its systems. It is for players who enjoy hybrid RTS-RPG design, fantasy atmosphere, and the satisfaction of slowly building something over many hours.
