The story
Lewis, a brilliant young inventor, is keen on creating a time machine to find his mother, who abandoned him in an orphanage. Things take a turn when he meets Wilbur Robinson and his family.
What it’s like
Bright, saturated CGI animation with a retro-futurist sheen: cheerful primary colors, glossy metal surfaces, and cluttered, lived-in rooms full of gadgets, with the future rendered as a bustling city of hovering cars and loopy, rounded machinery. The camera moves briskly and playfully, with fast cuts, swooping flights and sight gags packed into nearly every frame, while the score is bouncy and orchestral with whimsical brass and a warm, sentimental swell at the emotional beats. The vibe is upbeat and inventive, with a gentle undercurrent of wistfulness about being left behind and finding a home. Intensity is mild: there is slapstick action, a few tense chase sequences and a dinosaur sequence, but no gore, no sexual content and nothing truly frightening, though a villain pushes things a little. It suits a family movie night, a lighthearted weekend afternoon or a comfort watch when you want something energetic and kind. It is made for people who enjoy playful, big-hearted animation, where the adventure is busy and the sincerity lands without being heavy.
