The story
A wary CIA officer investigates a charismatic man who sparks a spiritual movement and stirs political unrest. Who exactly is he? And what does he want?
What it’s like
Sun-bleached desert towns, dust hanging in hard afternoon light, and crowded markets shot with a restless, handheld closeness, then cut to chilled government offices lit by fluorescent white. The mood is watchful and unresolved, a slow-burn political thriller with spiritual ambiguity, built on glances, pauses and rooms where people talk around what they mean. Pacing is deliberate, with long scenes of negotiation and surveillance punctuated by sudden, unsettling bursts of unrest. Violence is present and abrupt: gunfire, bombings and the aftermath of attacks, shown with some brutality but without lingering gore. There is tension and dread throughout, along with some grief and political cruelty, though little sexual content. The emotional register stays understated: a sceptical intelligence officer gradually drawn into doubt, and a charismatic stranger whose intentions never quite settle. It suits a late-night watch alone or a focused weekend binge, for viewers who enjoy geopolitical intrigue, religious ambiguity and a story that trusts them to read between the lines.
