The story

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence continues the Metal Gear Solid series tradition of follow-up enhanced, international version releases. Subsistence's online multiplayer component, titled Metal Gear Online, consists of five tournament-style game modes, each with a capacity of up to eight players. This mode pits players, each playing as a generic soldier against each other in deathmatch battles and variations of capture the flag, using stages, items, maneuvers, and units (such as the KGB, GRU or Ocelot Unit) from the main game.

What it’s like

Humid green jungle under a heavy canopy, with dappled light, drifting mist, and rain that hisses through the leaves, all rendered in the warm, muddy palette of a 1960s Soviet-Cold War setting. The camera hangs close over the shoulder for stealth crawls through grass and mud, then pulls back into long, talky cutscenes of stiff uniforms, smoky interiors, and character close-ups that linger. Its vibe is tense, melancholy, and tactical, a slow-burn espionage drama with bursts of sudden violence. The score mixes swelling orchestral strings with radio static and quiet ambient jungle sounds, and the pace is deliberate, alternating long stretches of patient sneaking and camouflage management with theatrical set pieces. Its people are soldiers and spies whose loyalties and grief slowly come into focus. Intensity is moderate to high: there are firefights, brutal close-combat kills, and a harrowing interrogation sequence with torture and threats, but little that is gratuitously gory. The added Metal Gear Online mode brings eight-player tournament-style deathmatch and capture-the-flag matches with the same stealth and items. This suits players who want an atmospheric, story-heavy experience in a rainy evening or late-night session, along with fans of tense, character-driven stealth games.
