The story

Metal Gear Solid Master Collection: Volume 1 compiles the early entries in the Metal Gear series into a single package, offering players the opportunity to experience the origins of stealth action gameplay. The collection includes the following titles: Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid (with VR Missions/Special Missions), Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (HD Collection version), Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (HD Collection version), as well as the NES/Famicom version of Metal Gear and Snake’s Revenge. Regional versions of the titles are available as additional downloads. Additional content includes the digital graphic novels Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel and Metal Gear Solid 2: Digital Graphic Novel. A set of digital books is also provided, comprising screenplay and master books for Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. These books can be accessed from the game’s main menu. The collection also features the Metal Gear Solid: Digital Soundtrack.

What it’s like

Pixel-crisp sprites on a dim grey grid give way to the sharper, moodier 3D of the PlayStation era, with the whole collection carrying the grainy, sepia-tinted atmosphere of cold-war military compounds, rain-slicked hangars, snowbound bases, and fluorescent-lit corridors. Sound is a patchwork of chiptune blips, sparse synth pulses, and long stretches of near silence broken by a radio crackle or the soft clatter of a footstep on metal grating. Movement is deliberate and tense: you crouch, peek around crates, and wait for guards to pass, so the rhythm is patient, punctuated by abrupt codec calls and theatrical boss showdowns that feel like set pieces in a conspiracy thriller. Its vibe is brooding, self-aware, and dryly absurd, a mix of tense paranoia and playful melodrama, with plenty of talky interludes that let the mood breathe. Violence is stylised and mostly bloodless, with gunfire, punches, and occasional gruesome deaths and brief, dark themes of torture and cruelty in the later entries; sexual content is minimal and mostly suggestive. It suits a late-night solo session, a retro-minded weekend of replaying classics, or anyone who wants slow, atmospheric tension and clever, over-the-top storytelling for players who enjoy thinking their way through a stealth puzzle.
