The story
Hrot is a single-player retro FPS set in a small socialist country neighboring Soviet Union (Czechoslovakia) after an unspecified disaster in 1986. Those times were dark and terrifying and so is the game.
What it’s like
Grimy, low-resolution textures and muddy brown-grey palettes give this retro shooter a washed-out, Eastern Bloc industrial look, with concrete panel blocks, sodium-lit corridors and bleak rural stretches that feel carved from old photographs. The sound design leans on faint hums, distant machinery and sudden, sharp gunfire against long stretches of unsettling quiet, while the mood stays oppressive and claustrophobic, with the menace of a state that feels both mundane and sinister. Its vibe is bleak, dread-soaked and uneasy, the kind of experience suited to a late night alone with the lights off and headphones on. Pacing is deliberate, with tense exploration punctuated by frantic combat, and the arc follows a lone protagonist pressed deeper into a hostile, decaying world. Violence is frequent and fairly graphic in a classic retro way, with blood and gore during firefights, and the fear is more atmospheric than jump-scare driven. It suits players who want a grim, period-flavoured horror shooter with a strong sense of place and no tenderness to soften it.
