The story
A fanboy of a supervillain supergroup known as the Vicious 6, Gru hatches a plan to become evil enough to join them, with the backup of his followers, the Minions.
What it’s like
Bright, saturated 3D animation with a deliberately retro edge: 1970s fashion, wide-collared suits, lava lamps, flared shadows and rounded, toy-like sets that look like a mid-century sitcom remade in candy colours. The camera moves with brisk, kinetic energy, whipping through hallways and chase sequences, while the soundtrack leans on period pop and jaunty orchestral stings that undercut the sillier beats. The mood is cheerfully mischievous, a sunny Saturday-morning cartoon with a wink, best for a lazy afternoon, a family movie night, or a light comfort rewatch. Pacing is fast and gag-dense, with slapstick, running jokes and a few quieter emotional beats about a young misfit wanting to belong and learning what loyalty costs. Violence is cartoonish and bloodless: chases, explosions, pratfalls and mock-menacing villains, with no real gore, sexual content or lasting fear. It suits families, fans of the franchise, and anyone wanting bright, goofy, low-stakes animation with a sly sense of humour.
