The story

Fa Mulan gets the surprise of her young life when her love, Captain Li Shang asks for her hand in marriage. Before the two can have their happily ever after, the Emperor assigns them a secret mission, to escort three princesses to Chang'an, China. Mushu is determined to drive a wedge between the couple after he learns that he will lose his guardian job if Mulan marries into the Li family.

What it’s like

Bright, hand-drawn cel animation with saturated reds, golds and jade greens, the frames busy with lanterns, silk, and sunlit courtyards, and the camera mostly sweeping through the action in clean, flat-lit compositions. The music is a bouncy blend of pop-leaning songs and playful orchestral cues, with comic sound effects and fast cuts that keep the energy up. The vibe is light, cheerful and breezy, a fun comfort watch for a lazy afternoon or a family movie night with kids. It moves at a brisk, episodic clip, with gags and musical numbers punctuating a gentle romantic storyline in which a young warrior and her partner navigate a tangle of expectations and a mischievous little dragon's scheming. The emotional register stays warm and low-stakes, with the central relationship approached through teasing and affection rather than heartbreak. Intensity is mild: some slapstick, brief scuffles and playful peril, with no gore and little real menace. It suits families, younger viewers, and anyone wanting a sunny, uncomplicated animated sequel.
