The story

After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana journeys alongside Maui and a new crew to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she's ever faced.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated animation with the sea doing most of the work: turquoise lagoons, deep indigo open water, sunlit reefs full of glowing corals, and volcanic islands rendered in warm ochre and jungle green. The camera swoops and banks through wide vistas and dives into underwater scenes, while the chase and battle sequences are fast and kinetic, with bold, painterly character design and a lively sense of motion. The score is built on drums, chanting and sweeping orchestral swells, with a few big sung numbers that lean into celebration. Pacing is brisk and playful, with plenty of physical comedy and banter that keeps the mood buoyant even when the stakes rise. Emotionally it is warm and earnest, centred on a young woman finding her footing as a leader and learning to trust her own sense of direction. Intensity is mild: some peril, a giant creature and a few tense confrontations, but no gore and little real fear. It suits a family movie night, a sunny afternoon, or a comfort watch for anyone who loves ocean adventure, big musical moments and gentle, optimistic storytelling.
