The story
As with all games in the NBA Live series you can draft, trade and edit players. Play a full season, exhibition or just the playoffs. 96 includes 29 teams including the expansion Toronto and Vancouver teams.
What it’s like
Chunky sprite-based players bounce across flat, brightly lit arenas in a clean, early-mid-nineties sports-broadcast palette: saturated team colours, bold uniform blocks, a bright hardwood sheen and crowds rendered as dense static. The camera sits at a fixed, high side-on angle, so the whole court stays readable at once, and the view snaps into tighter framing for dunks and fast breaks. Sound is squeaking sneakers, the thud of the ball, a whistle, and a loop of arena noise, with menu music that sounds like a sampled synth horn-line. Pacing is brisk and arcade-like, with full-court runs and quick trades in between, and the feel in the hands is light, responsive and a little rough around the edges. Gentle and non-violent, with fouls and scuffles as the only physical contact. Suits a weekend afternoon with a controller, a season-mode run in the background, or a nostalgic evening with friends in split-screen. Made for people who love retro sports sims, roster-tinkering, and the warm, low-stakes buzz of a 16-bit basketball season.
