The story
The second part in Electronic Arts' hockey series. It features the NHLPA license (so it has real player names), but not the NHL license (so it doesn't have NHL team names). Gameplay is altered only slightly over the predecessor. Regular season and Playoff modes are available. Goalies have improved AI, there are more foul play options and the game now features detailed statistics.
What it’s like
Bright, flat arena light on a top-down rink, with crisp sprite players in saturated jerseys skating over pale ice that gleams under the scoreboard glow. The look is 16-bit and deliberately chunky: short, bouncing skaters, puck trails you can follow at a glance, and clean white lines that cut across a wide, uncluttered view of the action. The sound is a brisk arena bed of whistles, skate scrapes and a synth-y crowd roar that swells on goals and drops to a tick when play stops for a penalty. It is a sporty, unfussy vibe, the sort of thing you pick up for a quick period on a weekday evening or a long multiplayer session with a friend on the couch. Pacing is fast and reactive, with the rhythm set by faceoffs, line changes and the odd scrap, and the register is competitive and playful rather than tense. Violence is limited to shoving, checks and fighting animations and penalties; nothing graphic or gory. It suits sports fans and hockey nostalgics who want straightforward, arcade-leaning play with real player names and a satisfyingly crunchy ice-level feel.
